ABSTRACT Plants and their extracts have immense potential for the management and treatment of wounds. Wound healing is complicated process that involves four phases: (i) coagulation begins immediately after injury, (ii) Inflammation which begins within hours, (iii) Proliferation which begins within days, (iv) Remodeling up to period of week, months, up to year. The phytomedicines for wound healing are not only cheap and affordable but also purportedly safe as hypersensitive reactions are rarely encountered with the use of these agents.
ABSTRACT To reveal the traditional claims of Butea monosperma in the treatment of diabetes, investigation was carried out to evaluate its effect on dexamethasone (Dexa) induced hyperglycemia in mice. In the present study mice were treated with pre standardized dose of Dexamethasone (1mg/kg body wt. i.m.) for 22 days and effect of n-butanolic (NBF) fraction of flowers of B. monosperma at three different doses (50,100,200 mg/kg body wt. p.o.) were studied. The diabetic mice showed increase in serum glucose level, total cholesterol level, LDL, VLDL, serum triglyceride level and Athrogenic index and decreased body weight. After the administration of different doses of NBF there was significant decreased in serum glucose level in groups receiving 100 mg/kg (p<0.05) and 200 mg/kg (p<0.01) as compare with control. The NBF also showed significant decrease in total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL, serum triglyceride, Athrogenic index, LPO and Significant increase in body weight and HDL. FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING CAPACITY AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF Sesbania grandiflora L. Pers. (WHITE VAIRY)

ABSTRACT Antioxidants act as a major defense against radical-medicated toxicity by protecting against the damage caused by free radicals. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in more than 100 diseases, including malaria, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, heart disease, stroke, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, and cancer. The present study deals with in vitro antioxidant activity of acetone and ethanol extract of Sesbania grandiflora by using DPPH assay, total phenolic content, reducing power assay and Inhibition of lipid oxidation in linoleic acid emulsion. The percentage of scavenging activity at different concentrations was determined and the value of the extracts was compared with that of standard, ascorbic acid and tannic acid. The highest free radical scavenging effect and total phenolic content of the leaf ethanol extract was observed. The peroxidation inhibiting activity of the leaf acetone extracts recorded using the linoleic acid emulsion system, showed very good antioxidant activity. EVALUATION OF ANALGESIC AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES OF Xanthium strumarium L.

ABSTRACT The petroleum ether extract of Xanthium Strumarium L. (Family-Compositae), was evaluated for analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight. The tail immersion and acetic acid writhing response in mice were used to assess analgesic activity. The acute toxicity study of the extract had shown no sign of toxicity up to a dose level of 2000mg/kg body weight. Carrageenan induced paw edema in rats, which is an acute model used to assess anti-inflammatory activity. The extract has inhibited paw edema in dose related manner. A dose dependent analgesic action was obtained against tail immersion and writhing test indicating that analgesic activity may be involved in the inhibition of the pain. Thus the petroleum ether extract of Xanthium Strumarium L. possess significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. KEYWORDS: Xanthium Strumarium L., Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic, Writhing.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF AQUEOUS AND ETHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACTS OF Musa paradisiaca L. (Musaceae) ON SOME BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN RATS

ABSTRACT The present work was undertaken to evaluate the effects of the aqueous and ethanolic leaf extracts of M. paradisiaca on some biomolecules in rats. Five groups of albino rats were respectively treated orally with 250 and 1000mg/kg of ethanolic extract, 250 and 1000 mg/kg of aqueous extract, and saline water daily for 28 days. Blood was collected on the 29th day. Blood serum concentrations of some key liver and kidney marker enzymes and biomolecules were evaluated. The results show that the aqueous extract significantly affected the levels of Aspartate transaminase, Alanine aminotransaminases, High density lipoproteins, total protein and globulins, while the ethanolic extract did not. Neither the aqueous nor ethanolic extract affected the serum level of total lipids and triglyceride. Both extracts however significantly affected the concentrations of Na+, K+ and Cl-. The results of this work indicate the likely hepatotoxicity of the 250 mg/kg aqueous extracts. But both ethanolic and aqueous extracts gave an indication of nephrotoxicity, with 250 mg/kg aqueous extract producing the greatest effect. KEYWORDS: Musa paradisiaca, nephrotoxicity, leaf extract.

ANTI DIABETIC, HYPOLIPIDEMIC AND ANTI OXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF THE PLANT EXTRACTS OF Morus alba Linn.
ABSTRACT The present study deals with the preliminary phyto physicochemical evaluation of a well known folklore remedy for diabetic and hyperlipidemic activityi.e Morus alba Linn. In preliminary phyto chemical investigation was found that Aminoacids, Tannins, Phytosterols, Flavanoids, Saponins, Triterpenoids and Cardiacglycosides present in the extracts. The plant leaves were collected for this work at Govt. Agriculture College Othakadai, Madurai, Tamilnadu. The leaves were identified and confirmed by Dr.D.Stephen PhD, Botanist, American College of Arts and Science, and then subjected for morphological, microscopical and physicochemical analysis. The oral administration of Morus alba.Linn was significantly reduces the Total cholesterol, LDL, Triglycerides, HDL level at the dose of 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg respectively for 30 days. Reduction of the DPPH radicals can be observed by the decrease in absorbance at 517 nm. The scavenging capacity of the extract was found to be 62.52%. Extract of Morus alba inhibited FeSo4 induced lipid peroxidation in a dose dependant manner. Lipid per oxidation of the extract was found to be 55.53%. Oral administration of alcoholic leaf extract at 10mg, 50mg, 100mg/kg body weight. Significantly lowered the blood glucose level as compared to the untreated diabetic rats. DETERMINATION OF TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT AND IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT INVESTIGATION OF ETHANOLIC AND METHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACTS OF Centella asiatica

ABSTRACT The presence of natural antioxidant in plants is well known. This paper has reported the total phenolic content analysis and antioxidant activities of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Centella asiatica leaves. The ethanolic and methanolic extracts showed the phenolic content levels of 2.74 g/100 g and 2.71 g/100g and flavonoid levels of 0.351 g/100 g and 0.347g/100g respectively. The antioxidant investigation of Centella asiatica extracts was done for SOD, catalase, peroxidase, GPx, ascorbate oxidase. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, ascorbic acid, MDA and dine conjugates. The inevitable generation of ROS in biological system and the oxidative damage is counterpoised by an array of enzymatic defense system. From the present study, it has been found that both the extracts of Centella asiatica have significant amount of antioxidant enzymes but ethanolic extract showed a greater extent of antioxidant enzymes. ANTHELMINTIC ACTIVITY OF THE ROOTS OF Rotula aquatica Lour.
ABSTRACT Rotula aquatica Lour belongs to family borogenaceae known in Ayurveda as pashanbed.it was collected from the ganges of river Netravati Manglore District authenticated and dried under sun ,powdered and extracted with various solvents by successive soxhlet hot extraction process with increasing order of polarity on phytochemical investigation , the petroleum ether extract and alcoholic extracts has shown alkaloids and flavone glycosides so the drug is screened for anthelmintic activity on adult earth worms pheritma posthuma, using albendazole as standarded drug. Both petroleum ether and alcoholic extract has shown significant anthelmintic activity compared to standared drug albendazole.
